Business decision-making process
The process

From product idea
to a smarter decision.

Every First Pancake engagement follows the same five-step process — designed to produce a clear, practical recommendation, not just a report.

01

Bring the bet

Share the product, offer, category, or launch decision you are considering. You do not need a polished business plan — a product idea, a rough visual, a proposed price, and a few competitor links is enough to begin.

02

Define the question

We identify the assumption that matters most: buyer, price, positioning, margin, demand, or channel. Every engagement is scoped around one product or offer, one primary customer, one primary sales channel, and one central business decision.

03

Build the test

We design the smallest practical experiment capable of producing useful evidence. Depending on the service, this may include market research, competitor analysis, customer feedback, concept testing, or a live demand test.

04

Read the signal

We review market data, customer feedback, demand behavior, and commercial constraints. The goal is not to tell you that people "liked" the idea — it is to help you decide what to fund, what to improve, and what to stop.

05

Make the next move

You receive a clear recommendation: Cook It, Flip It, or Toss It — along with a practical plan for what to do next. Every engagement ends with a decision, not just a report.

The recommendation

Every engagement ends with a clear call.

Cook It

The evidence supports moving forward. The opportunity is commercially plausible and the next investment is justified.

Flip It

The underlying idea has promise, but the product, offer, price, audience, or message needs adjustment before the next test.

Toss It

The current version has too much risk, too little differentiation, weak economics, or insufficient evidence to justify more investment.

Questions

Common questions

Do I need a finished product to start?

No. Depending on the service, you may begin with a concept, sketch, render, prototype, product sample, competitor reference, or early product page.

How long does each engagement take?

The First Pancake Review takes 7 business days. The First Pancake Test takes 15 business days. The Heat Test runs 4–5 weeks. The Test Kitchen is an ongoing monthly retainer.

What if the recommendation is "Toss It"?

That is still a successful engagement. Avoiding a poor inventory or launch decision can save far more money than the cost of the validation work.

Can you test more than one product at a time?

Each engagement is scoped around one primary product or offer. Additional products, audiences, channels, or experiments are scoped separately.

Who pays for surveys, ad spend, and testing tools?

Those costs are separate from the service fee and require client approval. They may be paid directly by the client or funded through a pre-approved evidence budget.

Is this the same as market research?

Partly. First Pancake combines market research, customer evidence, e-commerce experience, commercial judgment, pricing logic, and structured testing — not just survey data.
